Essential Oils for Supporting Libido & Restful Sleep

We all know what we’re like when we’re not getting any. Luckily, there are essential oils to help with both! But why do I talk about essential oils for libido and sleep together? Don’t we need to be excited for one and calm for the other? The answer is in our body’s response to stress and stimuli and the functioning of our nervous system.

When you’re hyped up and stressed out, you’ve got to get yourself back into the parasympathetic state also known as ‘rest and digest’ and ‘feed and breed.’ Certain bodily functions are stimulated, lubricating fluids begin secreting, and emotions come back into balance. This gets us into the perfect place for either sexual arousal or drifting into restful sleep.

Luckily, we have many essential oils that can help activate the parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS)! Several essential oils work wonders for enhancing libido and sexual arousal, decreasing our inhibitions, and relieving sexual anxiety. And many of these same essential oils are known to help calm the mind and body, quiet the train of thoughts that keep us up at night, restore balance our hormones and neurotransmitters, and set the stage for relaxation and deeper sleep.

Some of my favorite essential oils to activate the PSNS for Libido and Sleep are:

Sandalwood, Frankincense, Jasmine Absolute, Ylang Ylang, Lavender, and Sweet Orange.

Using these essential oils before bed can help put you in the mood for love… and for sleep. Some of the best ways to use essential oils at nighttime are in a diffuser, applying a massage or body oil, applying oils in a roll-on to upper chest, inner arms, and bottom of the feet, enjoying a relaxing aromatic bath, or using a room or linen spray. I have an easy recipe for you!

DIY Libido & Sleep Blend:

3 drops Australian Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum, a sustainably-harvested species)

3 drops Jasmine Absolute (Jasminum grandiflorum or J. sambac)

6 drops Blood Orange (Citrus sinensis)

12 drops total

To enjoy this Libido & Sleep Blend, add the 12 drops to:

  • One ounce of carrier oil, such as Jojoba or Marula Oil, and apply it as an evening massage oil or a little in your bath.

  • A rollerball bottle with 10ml Fractionated Coconut Oil for a therapeutic perfume (apply to upper chest, neck, and inner arms before bed).

  • One ounce of water in a glass or aluminum spray bottle and spritz the bedroom and/or bed linens.
